It has been Capt. B. purpose to make this voyage have (that is to New London) without making any ^[[none[[guess]] ]] for provisions - or of getting any of any vessel unless by ^[[way of]] Exchanging a barrel of Salt Pork on the Salt junk. His great desire has been to avoid running up of any Bill on a/c G.H. But it has become evident that he will be obliged to get provisions for his Ship or his Co. will have to face very hard eve when arrival in the States This Eve Capt. B. indicated to me what he had about concluded to do about stopping at St. John's. I responded at once frankly that by his doing so ^[[stopping for provisions for his men]] it would be one of the best deeds of his life - that in truth it was a humanitarian duty he owed to those under him. Shortly after he announced his conclusion (wh. was to stop) the News was 'like wild-fire' fore & aft, giving happy countenance to each & to all. We do need fresh food & enough of it to satisfy Nature's demand. Not a man aboard but feels "half-starved". Had the Ship's Co. lived ^[[last week living]] on hard tack & "Salt-junk" as it has been obliged to since starting on this Voyage not a man, in my opinion, would now be alive! Capt. B announced to me to have a telegraphic despatch ready
