Wednesday, Aug 20th 1862
It is expected that to-morrow we shall make anchorage in St. John's Harbor, Newfoundland. I have a Telegraph ^[[despatch]] ready to send to the States. It is addressed to Henry Grinnell & Cyrus W Field Esq. New York - Bill Bishop & Miles Greenwood Cinncinnati , O. - I shall ^[[probably [[?]] at]] [[strikethrough]] now [[/strikethrough]] ^[[(St Johns)]] learn much [[underlined]] News [[/underlined]] - tho' [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough ^[[by]] some the answers to most my questions would be ^[[received as]] [[underlined]] rather [[/underlined]] stale! [[strikethrough]] one of [[/strikethrough]] The 1st Question will [[underlined]] naturally [[/underlined]] be ( [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] ^[[the same of anyone]] [[strikethrough]] an [[/strikethrough]] [[underlined]] American [[/underlined]]): 'Whose's PRESIDENT?'
Thursday, Aug. 21st 1862
The wind during the night & most of the day [[underlined]] baffling [[/underlined]] About 3 P.M. far off ^[[over]] the lee bow, raised a sail - some thought it to be a Steamer its progress being so much greater than ours. Some also thought they saw land directly ahead of our present course (W. by compass) - but Capt. B. had just taken PM Obs & consulted his chart wh. satisfied him the supposed or apparent land was simply Cape "Fly Away". At 4 PM Fair Wind & headed direct for St. John's - Capt B. as well as rest of Ship's Co. "brushing" up. Civilization demands our profound respect - It shall have it with all our clean faces! Capt. B. has shaved in Coffee!  Not being any hot water on hand, he demanded hot Coffee & got it! - our Coffee (?) burnt-bread diluted with water.
