Transcription Notes:
Comment from the Transcription Team: It is more challenging to key in special characters, so our instruction ask you not to worry too much about them, just do the best you can. However, when one is able to produce the special characters, we welcome them. As long as the characters look right, we can leave them in place. Thank you. Transcription Center Team Transcribed in the Journal page box over the transcription page view so that the transcription looks the same as the Journal page. "Enc" stands for Encampment which is how Hall numbered nis camps. Hall lists coordinates of his first encampment as "First encampment in lat. 62? 33' N., long. 64? 43' W." [page 354 of his book of the expedition. I get the feeling from this page he is checking and making adjustments (corrections ?) to his field notes and calculations. Hall's exploration on the 16th of April, 1862, is described on page 511 of his book. This page took more than an hour, and I was not satisfied. I read page 511ff to see if I could improve the transcription. I worked another hour, saving as I went, and the SI systmem lost all the changes/additions. Gave up for now to see if this change is recorded. mandc
