Today [this P.M.] while engaged taking angles by sextant connecting various points of my visitation while North, and taking their bearings also, I had occasion to change my position from the starboard to larboard side of the vessel. I had noted my few hours work on ^[[bland[[guess]] ]] cards [paste board]. These I laid down on the tufferance[[guess]] just beneath the boom-Sail the wind from wh. caught the records of my work & whipped [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] all ^[[save one]] overboard. My regrets were deep but to no purpose - they could not be retrieved the ship being under full sail & driving ahead Six Knots per hour.
One small [[strikethrough]] Cad [[/strikethrough]] Card with the following few obs. was the one saved
"50 + 50 + 25 + 4/12 = 125 1/3 length of log hou[[guess]]

The work lost (or the Record of it) contained the exact Courses, time of running out Log line, Sextant & Compass sights, Noon obs. of Alt. of [[symbol]] for Lat &c I had measured second base lines in connection with my taking Sex. Angles & bearings from wh. to deduce distances to previous[[guess]] Points. But happily all those obs. have been anticipated by the exploration excursions I have made while here North.
