Monday, Aug 10th 1862 Today [this P.M.] while engaged taking angles by sextant connecting various points of my visitation while North, and taking their bearings also, I had occasion to change my position from the starboard to larboard side of the vessel. I had noted my few hours work on ^[[bland[[guess]] ]] cards [paste board]. These I laid down on the tufferance[[guess]] just beneath the boom-Sail the wind from wh. caught the records of my work & whipped [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] all ^[[save one]] overboard. My regrets were deep but to no purpose - they could not be retrieved the ship being under full sail & driving ahead Six Knots per hour.
