AM N.E. light cloudy - dist. objects very distinct
M N.E. light - growing thick
PM N.E. fresh thick fog & rain
This morning Kin-gaite, Resolution Island & those about it
loomed up large - quite thankful [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] indication of storm.
Innuit Miner with Boat Crew of his people Innuits went out into the pack to-day after Walrus - heard the Walrus barking - every direction but could not pruc[[?]] the pack to approach & kill any I was somewhat amused while he Miner was relating the incidents while out to-day Walrusing. Some of the officers suggested that Miner was afraid to puncture the pack now in Bay of Frobisher otherwise he would have secured as many walrus as he might have desired. Mate Lamb spoke up saying Miner might have been afraid, but Lamb's [[?]] (meaning himself), that was not afraid to drive his boat int any pack about have for walrus or anything else.
I wanted to say a few words at this point to illustrate Lamb's courage but I kept silence doing a vast deal of thinking by the by not forgetting haven bond & live like some men are when tested before a very hot stove in a good water & said brief[[guess]] C[[?]] tr[[?]] & how this show of boldness proves all [[?]] when in the sight of ^[[any]] dangerous or the [[underlined]] appearance [[/underlined]] of any!

One year ago the G. H. broke out of her ice prison! This A.M. Mates Rogers, Gardiner & Lamb with their crews & Boats went out into the Bay after Walrus - Short time after they left thick fog set in. The tide carried them up opposite Sharko before they were aware of it. Could go a little further [[?]] a boat length Now the fog After lighting up a little they fell in with a small school Walrus of wh. they struck & made sure of 3 large ones. This walrus party ventured by three PM with about three tons fresh provision.
No place in the world where a living is obtained with less work than here. These 3 walrus make 40 that have been secured here since the G. H.'s Company 1st came here this season (40 beside some 2 or 3 young ones). "Spikes" & Morgan, 2 parties that refused to respond to the call of the officers to go out after provisions! On this a/c & for the reason that a portion of his crew is at the ship Robt. Smith could not go out with his Boat. The "talk" that I gave S. for the example he as an officer was setting to the men! His sulky manner often is - My additional shots wh. brought him to acknowledge the facts I wholly stated to him. Walrus brains for supper - Our uniform dish, stewed Walrus - No bilnd[[guess]] - nothing but fresh walrus!

And still the George Henry is locked in ice. Anxious, indeed are all to depart for the states - but King Ice will not yet let us go. A good 'Nor Wester' would drive the pack wh. passes so closely & see unrelentingly the W. Coast Davis Strait, away & allow the ice wh. holds dominion over the G. H.'s pathway to the sea to give way. It may be pack will keep us here another year. I hope not - I trust in 2 weeks more nor shall be on our way home there to prepare for the voyage I have so dear to heart, God grant an early deliverance from our ice foe.
Stenny ^[[with]] his Innuit wife for the time he is in the country started off yesterday PM on to took-too hunt. The rains of last night drove him & his [[?]] back, they having arrived here this P.M.

This PM learning that the Innuits here were about to remove up into the other Bay as far as the open water would allow them, I at once set my wits to work how I could secure ^[[some of]] [[strikethrough]] them [[/strikethrough]] to accompany me again to to "Countess of Warwick's Sound" & to be of ^[[such]] service to me in the boat that I could keep good D.R. ofc. I 1st conversed with Mate Rogers. He agreed to accompany me with his ^[[(one of]] the G H Boats. I then got him to go with me to secure Miner & Koo-per-neu-ung with their wives. Frank, one of the G. H.'s men, also is to go. I give to Miner & Koo-per-neu-ung each a wool shirt. I hope now to survey "Countess of Warwick's Sound" more thoroughly & to be enabled to make good my attempts to keep a/c distance & courses made
