Friday May 30, 1862 +23° AM S. Light Fair (At 2AM Ther. +13° & [[underlined]] Fair [[/underlined]]) +40° Calm " +30° PM S.E. Light Cloudy (Sun out of sight by clouds after 2 PM At IX AM Ebierbing * Kood-loo arrived with team of dogs from the place below to where they removed a few days since. Ebierbing brought ^[[& gave]] me 1/2 a saddle fine, large took-too (rein-deer) he also gave the Steward a portion of one. He says that he killed 2 rein-deer day before yesterday & Kood-loo one. Soon after Ebierbing arrived I made arrangements with him that as soon as he should return from a trip down to where Capt B. is (where he is to go to take some things Ca[pt B. wants) he will accompany me with his team of dogs to Countess of Warwick's Sound stopping there a week or so. It is concluded that I [[strikethrough]] had not [[/strikethrough]] remain aboard G.H. - not accompany E. to Og-bier-seer-o-ping as it will make the sledge too heavily loaded for a quick trip the snow being now soft. At V P.M. Ebierbing & Kood-loo start off on return to their families. During the day E engaged stretching or putting on drying bars a Polar Bear skin that he designs for me. I bought one of Kood-loo while these Innuits were aboard. This I design for "George Henry" - for the interest of all concerned. While they remain aboard, the Steward took their dogs & sledge & went down to Rescue Harbor for a load of wood wh. he found on one of the Islands there. By the by this Steward handed me a lot of [[underlined]] "Hard Tack" [[/underlined]] wh. [[end page]] [[start page]] [[boxed date]] 1862 May 30 Fri [[/boxed date]] Capr. B. ordered to be saved for me & given me on my return from my sledge trip up Bay of Frobisher. On weighing it found it to pull down 8 lbs ^[[including bread ration). On examining & tasting some of the pieces the (whole being broken into many small fragments) found the bread ^[[all broken, mouldy & was in fact, in a very much damaged state. None but a very [[underlined]] hungry [[/underlined]] man could make out to eat such stuff - Now I should not put such a matter on record if it were not for this fact: I know Capt. B. never ordered the [[underlined]] "leavings" or "sweepings" [[/underlined]] of a Bread cask to be given me while his men have good & perfect Bread; but the Steward has [[strikethrough]] end? [[/strikethrough]] endeavored to impress upon me such was & is the fact. What kind of feelings must I have when I sit down at our humble table, myself having soggy, damaged, soiled, broken Bread while I see the [[strikethrough]] Sterd [[/strikethrough]] Steward - & the seaman (Fluker) have good perfect, wholesome Bread. I remarked to the Steward as I took my place at dinner table to-day that the Bread wh. he had given me in compliance to Capt. B's orders was [[underlined]] very bad [[/underlined]] ^[[that it was]] badly broken up wet & mouldy. He replied that [[underlined]] 'it was the best he could do' - [[/underlined]] a palpable untruth for at the same time he had by his plate a whole [[strikethrough]] disk [[/strikethrough]] piece ^[[ (disk) ]] of [[underlined]] "hard-tack" [[/underlined]] - & Fluken the half of a Cake wh the moment before was whole, his (F's) intention being only to use but the half at dinner meal. The Bread I have may well be called [[underlined]] "selected" [[/underlined]] - the bad from the good - I having the bad. As I strictly avoid having any [[underlined]] words [[/underlined]] with any & all of the Ship's Co. - & have so done from the very first since leaving the States. I submit with humble heart to my fate. Yet I intend to call this matter to the attention of Capt. B. ^[[when I see him]] for I believe he will thank me for it as it will give him the opportunity of giving the Steward a lesson for this treating me under the clock that it was by Capt. B.'s orders. That portion of the Bread most sodden & mouldy I have commenced to dry in the Sun ^[[& some of it in the stove oven]]. Though a [[underlined]] "bitter-pill" [[/underlined]] I must eat it. All the bread handed to me 1/4 lb. Cake - Perhaps 4 of the largest pieces would make one. Many chips & much dirt among this Bread. [[end page]]
