discovered ^[[which were undoubtedly of Frobisher's Expedition]] for fuel. I was moved to appeal to him from the fact that on ascertaining from me the probable amount of the greatest deposit he underlined]] expressed [[/underlined]] his intention of using some of said Coals for fuel while prosecuting the whaling business over the Bay of Frobisher. I spent much time in reflecting upon this matter, finally came to the conclusion that I would introduce this matter to Capt. B. & get him to promise ne that he would not molest them. I omitted to bring it to his notice till time indicated. I mad my written appeal on the basis that said Coals were relics stamped with the Seal of three Centuries - that they were relics of an Expedition that received the patronage of the British Government - that they were the existing proof wh. on investigation would show they belonged to the age in wh. Frobisher sailed to the North & in fact that they were a part of his cargo. I said further in my appeal that it was quite possible the [[strikethrough]] the ? My appeal was made [[underlined]] with a heart full of anxiety for their preservation [[/underlined]]. But it had, as appears from the sequel, no effect. My heart feels thankful that I performed what I thought to be my duty under the circumstances. The Civilized & Enlightened world may condemn or justify me. I have done what I shall never regret to preserve from destruction relics of an Expedition in wh the Geographic World
