On my return found that Koo-jesse had but just come in from his visit down to the open water. Though he saw Seals, White Whales, Nowyers & Duck, got none. Poor mush [[?ct]] for the [[underlined]]poor[[/underlined]]dogs.

I did intend starting on return to-day but desirous of having one day's more exertion made by the Innuit Sealers to get something for the starving dogs. I conclude to remain here till Saturday. - Koo-jes-se is a pull-back - a drug to me. There is no use of my attempting to keep all my troubles with him within heart's tablet. It is but right I should give record of the obstacles I meet in my travels here North. He is a bad dispositioned Innuit. - Some-times exhihibits fair appearances - as if he really was a good fellow - I have tried him & tried him thoroughly - & have found - & do find that he is wanting in those elements that go to make up the real Man-ou on possible Innuit. Sharkey (Kar-nei-ung) is altogether of another mould & composition. He is all I have said of him in yesterday's record. I wonder myself [[underlined]]at myself[[//underlined]] for accepting his ^[[K's]] proffer of accompanying me on this trip when he learned that I was intending to make it. I knew him well - quite too well from his conduct while in my Voyage up Bay of Frobisher last fall that I should have allowed him to be one of my Co on this or any other trip. This day was well advanced (before he turned out. On asking him if he & Sharkey would not try & get a Seal - or more for dogs before starting he replied angrily that Could not go for there was too much wind . (Really but a trifling wind compared to the greater part of the time when Sealing is prosecuted) He also added that if he did go he should not try very hard. - I did not hear this latter remark
