When Henry was upon the sledge I walked ahead occasionally I was relieved by Henry's [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] walking ahead & taking a ride on sledge. As this seemed [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] afforded better travelling a distance from the shore I was obliged to lead this way for 10 miles or so by compass notwithstand high land of each side of this Bay & Bay only from one to 2 miles wide. During this afternoon the sun shining down through the storm that seemed hugging the Earth. The last 9 miles made along the west side of the Bay. Every few moments the [[strikethrough]] ridge of [[/strikethrough]] mountains ridge would show a [[strikethrough]] d[[?]] [[/strikethrough]] shaded contour, a [[underlined]] ghost (?) [[/underlined]] like faintness, by wh. I was enabled to make my course without compass on arriving to the ^[[W.]] channel bet. main land island at the entrance of Bay [[strikethrough]] ^[[by]] cutting through [[/strikethrough]] ^[[over [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] ]] the ridges of of the hard snow I found the sledge tracks made [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] going up.I followed it with great care knowing if I could keep it, it would lead directly to the igloo wh. was 2 miles off. But with all my care I lost the tracks therefore the only reliance was on my compass as land was closed from all view. Had there been a well trained leader to the dog team it would have followed the sledge track though showing itself only occasionally. Happily I had my bearing of the igloo taken on my way up yesterday wh. was nearly South (true) I took particular care to observe the exact direction from whence came the gale & glassy cutting snow by compass - then by it I had a constant guide. I had to [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[?]] the [[/strikethrough]] make to reach the igloo I started counting my paces. I directed Henry & keep the dogs close to my heels as the snow was flying so thick that a few feet between us separated us as tho closed in by thick darkness. The deviation ^[[up]] 1/2 point to the left would carry one out sea - ward - therefore the care I exercised then was greater risk in making the crossing I [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] write of. [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] The very ice beneath & around was liable to be swept by the gate from its position - but this risk had to be run. At 10 - 10 by chro. (5 - 10 approximate mean time of this place) I make the igloo coming directly upon it This laughing Innuit Sharkey was out looking anxiously & intently for my arrival. He hailed with with warm hand & congratulating words at my safe return. I soon learned that my good friend Koo-jes-se was out looking for me I could not but feel thankful that this people loved me so well as to venture out in such a storm as to hope to find & aid me in my escape from the fury up the ^[[ [[?]]ing]] elements. All through last night he kept my lantern as a beacon light on a pole by the igloo to direct me to it. It was a thank worthy act [[strikethrough]] for wh [[/strikethrough]] that deserves to be ever remembered by the writer of this.
As I had a purpose in view (wh. I will soon state) I proposed to myself to try an experiment to [[strikethrough]] to to [[/strikethrough]] night. I have tried it & the result corresponds to my expectations. The experiment I will now state - the object afterwards. After feeding Henry up to his fullest capacity (wh. is not of any meager order) with hot dishes of walrus meats & soup, while he was puffing away at a well filled & fired pipe I asked him glad of he was not glad at my having been to the head of that bay & of
