I here write a few intermediate words simply to state that the record of Saturday & + [[for Sunday]], following, I write up on Monday Apr 14, having started out Saturday on my exploring trip up the Bay by wh. I have my 3d ^[[& 5th]] Encampment intending to return eve of same day but did not till night of day following. I shall write up the Journal as tho written at the Close of each day

This day I have discovered the extent of the Bay commencing at Toong-wine & Ming-u-toon. The depth is greater than I anticipated. When I started out, I intended to be back at 3d encampment this night, but determination & enthusiasm - my love & delight of exploring lands & waters that not which ever have visited before - of exploring such portions of God's beautiful Earth [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] unknown to ^[[the]] Civilized World have led me to far away to be able to reach 3d encampment to-night, therefore, I make my 4th encampment ^[[on the ice near]] [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] the base of a noble mountain at my right as I look to the N. at the termination of this Bay having written for my sleeping Company "Henry" & 5 Innuit dogs!
It was well into the day before I started on this trip I asked Koo-jes-se this morning a little while before I started if I could go to the head of the Bay & return to night? He gave me to understand that I could. Before starting he & Sharkey went out young sealing.

Having dispached breakfast about 11 AM which consisted of Cooked Walrus meat - & also now frozen Walrus - I ordered my dog driver "Henry" to harness up the team to be ready for a start. I expected to be out quite into night before getting back, therefore, I took along 1/2 lb pemican & 1/4 lb Borden meat biscuit for a lunch. Wished to keep careful account of distance travelled [[strikethrough]] therefore [[/strikethrough]] so I get out the [[strikethrough]] fish[[guess]] [[/strikethrough]] line wh. I had brought from the ship (the [[underlined]] same line [[/underlined]] wh. had been used by me while on Greenland Coast near Holsteinburg in drawing out of the "Great deep" many a Cod & Hallibut [[underlined]] the same line [[/underlined]] that I used at or near the head of Bay Frobisher ^[[last fall]] making a trial for "Cod" a few moments before the Boat in wh. I & the lady portion of my Innuit crew were, was drawn into the swiftly running current of the ebbing tide & came so near being wrecked on the shoals below) & measured off with tape line good 75 feet.  The log consisted of a Cold Chisel used by me for chiselling out my rock-solid pemican. My Chronometer in Took-too was placed carefully in ^[["handy"]] position on the sledge, my compass, sextant & telescope occupying their usual places.
At 11-40 AM I took my departure my 1st Course was due N. The 1st mile took me even with the S. side of the important Island at the entrance, for such it is - It ^[[is]] [[strikethrough]] forms [[/strikethrough]] a "Break water" making a harbor above it of sufficient size & safety for a gi[[?]]ly preparation of the World's [[strikethrough]] navy [[/strikethrough]] Fleet. But I leave this & similar description for my Log Book. At h 2 - m 45 P.M. I made up even with the Mountain when I found 2 Tupiks at the commencement of this winter - where I had my [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] interesting
