hold upon the line (some 4 on 5 fathoms long) the seal [[strikethrough]] rock [[/strikethrough]] worked itself hastily along back into the igloo, its birth place - its natal home & then made a plunge to down seal hole into this tar-ri-o - (Sea water) Koo-jess-se allowed it full play of the whole length of the line he crawling with his full length into the Seal - igloos & with seal hook [[image - ( drawing of seal hook ) ]] by him awaited ^[[listlessly]] the appearance of mother seal. I was by him, there being just sufficient room through the opening that "Bell" had made when she caught the prize for me to push my self in. Then prostrate belly down we both laid awaiting result. In 3 or 4 minutes young seal returned popping up its [[?]] like head - & blowing or puffing [[underlined]] something like a whale. [[/underlined]] The air reduced scale - its large eyes glistening like lights from twinkling stars. It came directly to [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] its bed place on wh. K. & I were resting. As it attempted to crawl up where we were my ^[[Innuit]] companion gave it a "tunk" on the head signifying 'Go away - dive down - show to your mother that you the darling of [[strikethrough]] your [[/strikethrough]] her affection [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] one in trouble & when she comes to your side I'll h[[?]] her too!' B[[?]]ll & [[?]] with seal dog [[?]] close by us on the out side alev[[guess]] awaiting results. While prostrated, I had good view of a seals igloo. It was a model of the same as natives make for their own winter habitations complete dome shape - 5 feet or so in diameter & 2 1/2 feet high. The depth of snow above it some 5 feet. The platform on wh. K & I rested was one of sea ice on wh. the seal propers[[guess]] gave birth to its young & where it [[strikethrough]] s [[/strikethrough]] nursed it. on one side was the seal hole was sea water. coming up within 2 inches of the platform

But I cannot dwell on this matter - I have other work for my precious time. - Old seal did not show itself. Young seal was with drawn from water & Igloo - placed on the snow where Koo-jess-se placed his foot upon its back between the fore arms & pressed his weight The object of this I found to be to kill the seal by stopping its breathing. Innuits adopt this way for by [[?]] it with knife or spear they lose the precious portion, the blood. Having spent 2 or 3 minutes thus in this [[strikethrough]] ch[[?]] [[/strikethrough]] singular prosess of choking seal he requested "Bell" to take his place & continue & complete the operation wh. she did. K. returning to res[[?]] his place with "Sharkey" making our Igloo. On our arrival back learned from "Henry" that the dogs had made sad [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] havock with our walrus meat & blubber [[?]] the five moments he had left them on the announcement that "Bell" had caught a seal. The dogs had eaten a huge piece of blubber, some of the walrus meat a portion of "Sharkey's" young seal wh he caught yesterday & up-set things in general not excepting my chronometer! This ^[[was]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] [[?]] pay for young seal & to me ^[[matter was]] alarming! But on investigating found no damage done to chro. wh. was a great relief to me.
It was 9 o'clock before we got settled & every thing to night in our new house. How happy ought one to be to have the priviledge of accompanying a new domicile nearly every night [[strikethrough]] made [[/strikethrough]] [[underlined]] painted with rainbows [[/underlined]] - pure [[?]] being then combination of the ^[[?"chink" of]] primary colors.
Supper to night [[underlined]] blesseds[[guess]] cold - water [[/underlined]] - "Chunks of cold permican & now frozen walrus meat (The process of cutting out this 1st snow block !)
