twice had I been deceived [[strikethrough]] about [[/strikethrough]] about the head of it I take a course that would allow me to still better view - mountain top to mountain top - but finding that it was impossible to determine where the bay ended I told Henry I must either go [[strikethrough]] either [[/strikethrough]] to this head to day - [[strikethrough[[ of if [[/strikethrough]] or if not to-day I must to-morrow Henry had received a spear in one of his [[strikethrough]] as [[/strikethrough]] ankles by falling into a hole in the ice - & he was very much fatigued by the walk of only about 7 miles. I told him we would make the bay ice & then he might stop while I would pursue the course to the top of bay if found out to distant. On making the ice not far from the head found the travelling exceptionaly tedious & perplexing. A few steps good walking & then down through treacherous snow knee deep - the snow so firm as to require manly exertions to withdrawing the feet. However, by perserverance I pushed on till I discovered the head flanked by noble mountains. The west side (at the head) for a distance of [[strikethrough]] 12 [[/strikethrough]] ^[[one]] mile below it limited by perpendicular wall of Mts. One mile below the termination width of Bay little over 1/3 of a mile. Having spent 1/2 hour stepping base[[guess]] line & taking sights I made course igloo-ward. On making 1 mile on venture came across polar bear tracks - a little farther on others quite fresh the course of the tracks directly across the Bay. On making 2 miles Smith (Henry) [[strikethrough]] [[?]] just [[/strikethrough]] joined me again on getting down just opposite the place where I made land at Meridian[[guess]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] we were delighted on seeing a team of dogs & sledge approaching - A few moments after - Koo-jessee was along side of me with my "Greenlanders" Sharkey had returned from Oo-pung-ne [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]]

but 4 PM when Koo-jess-se took the dogs & sledge & kindly came after me. "Henry" & I placed ourselves on sledge & away we bounded. Koo-jes-se being quite snow blind - His eyes [[underlined]] very painful [[/underlined]] - Henry became dog - driver. At VII-30 ^[[PM]] arrived back to the Igloo. Sharkey made a business like trip to Oo-pung-ne-wing He got the dogs & piece of Pork I sent for! Sharkey captured one young seal going down & would have also got Ni-Noo if he had had any other weapon with him but a knife. He saw a Ni-noo (Polar Bear) but on the whole concluded to let him go for it was a doubtful case wh. would be the victor Sharkey ^[[or the bear Sharkey]] having, as stated, only the knife.
A glorious supper to night on my return. Tu-nuk-de-lien had cooked for me a dish of young seal. - Young seal & seal soup are choice viands.[[guess]]
