[[/boxed]] team miles up the Bay this side the Land Pass, the Island Oo-pung-ne-wing came into view - also Ne-pou-e-tie-sup-bing, the Bluff, black rocks where the kod-lu-narn put masts into their ship (schooner) ^[[nearly]] 300 years sgo! Passing on a little distance farther, Kod-lu-narn, the Island Where Frobisher landed his building materials & where ^[[the]] 5 white men he lost on his 4th voyage into this Bay built [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] the ship in wh. they attempted to return to home (England). We arrived at Oo-pung-ne-wiong IV P.M. having been on the way but 9 hours. I hoped to have just time to make Obs for time on my arrival but on getting out Artificial Horizon & sextant found Sun too obscure to make any further attempt. Soon after Meridian it began to clear up. We were welcomomed by Innuit large & small, on our arriving up to the place of the Igloos ^[[SW]] End of the Island of Oo-pung-ne-wing - & were met by Robt. Smith 3d Mate of the G. H. & 1/2 doz. of the Sea men living here among the Innuits. I enquired for Koo-jes-se but found that he was out Sealing - Nearly all the Innuits at home the broken character of the ice preventing their proceeding the Walrus hunt. Some two days since An-nu-wa struck a large Walrus but from the imperfect working of the harpoon it drawed out. Sterry worked on this harpoon when last here but done the job too hastily. The anvil of 3 Centuries - I had [[strikethrough]] not [[/strikethrough]] been here but a life time before I proceeded to old Ar-tark-par-ru's[[guess]] Igloo to obtain ^[[from]] him the precise spot where he had last seen it. I proposed that Ar-lood-loong (the wife of Artarkpu^[[me]]) Ar-tuk-pa-nu & An-nu-wu[[guess]] should go out & show me the spot where they had seen the "heavy stone" 'that Kod-lu-narn brought here ^[[to their country]] as they said a long, long, time ago'. Ar-lood-loong responded with alacrity to my wishes when I promised him beads & tobacco. She drew on her Kod-lins in a moment and bounded out like a [[strikethrough]] deer [[/strikethrough]] deer. She proceeded over the rocks Westward while I stopped a few minutes to get hold of all the pointings out of the spot where the anvil was seen last by Artarkparu & Annawa. Within 10 fathoms of the Igloo of Artark-paru is the place where the anvil once was. It is now in the tar-ri-o having been tumbled off the rocks close by into the sea. The spot where it now is by their description is within some 20 fathoms of said Igloo. They have seen it when at very low tide - at such times it is not in the water - They tell me that the ice will all go away where the anvil is before the vessel can get out to sea & that they will assist me in getting it. I promised them presents of Caps, shot, tobacco & powder if they ^[[would]] help me get it in time to take it Home with me. After ^[[their]] pointing out this matter, I accompanied by Young Smith followed after Ar-lood-loong.
