was packed full of larvae, mixed with the ants. A small hole in the bottom of the pocket led into a large (an inch in diameter) passage, extending vertically into the ground. It went deep, for I dug over a foot without finding bottom. The ants do not simulate death, but move [[strikethrough]] actively [[/strikethrough]] liesurely. The worker-like individual, a callow, was among the larvae. It being a callow is interesting.

Myrmicine: This is the one I have hitherto found only a [[virgin female symbol]] at a time. This nest was in a log, on the underside, beneath a piece of bark.
