Some of the temples were filled with soldiers whose manners as we passed were not always of the finest. We attempted to enter none of these. We went on to the top of the hill, the highest point within the wall, and from there saw the whole town. From this height the city looked like a great area of spotted black and white, white walls, marked by black roofs, straight black ridges and black tops of fire walls. Here and there the turrets and domes of modern business establishments and hotels gave a curious touch to the plain. The hill we were on was of rock, with grassy lawns,- rock of the type carried away to be placed in gardens, and evidently this had been a garden spot at some time.

Saturday, 1 August.

After a morning of picking up odds and ends and puttering around we went out to Hangchou Christian College, on a beautiful high site by the river, to see Arthur March. He had called on us Friday, having heard from some people in a nearby resort where he was with his family, that we were down here. We decided that we are cousins. though several generations removed, and we had much sport speculating on the exact connections. we found many points of common interest and opinion. After a good dinner out on the cool lawn in the moonlight, just the three of us, we went up to the observatory and looked at moon and satrs until it was high time for us to starting back. It is pleasant to meet a member of one's family and to enjoy the meeting. The ride back by moonlight, after the glorious view of the river from the hilltop, was inspiring.
