from the rest of man after we had come home. Later in the evening the mists cleared and the lights of many homes filled the valley. It is beautiful at night when the darkness hides the tin roofs, and the lights come out among the trees.

This afternoon the whole family went for a picnic to the "Caves", a high point of land near which [[strikethrough]] ca [[/strikethrough]] a cave has been cut out of the rock to serve as a Taoist temple. Within the cave is a spring, but in the shrine and the outbuildings on the ledge in front the typical Taoist incongruence and squalor was observable. It is too bad that a sight once chosen and improved with unimpeachable taste and vision should so decline under careless hands. The high point commanded a gorgeous view of the plain and the Yangtse. As the sun set a mist drfted over distant mountains like a bank of snow, and at the time the sunlight and cloud licked up a wooded slope like veritable fire. Behind and above us the clouds came up from over the mountain like huge foaming waves dashing up on a great breakwater. On the point there is a stone kiosk and an old tablet. We had supper and came home at dusk.

This afternoon Idressed in my wedding suit and Dorothy in the Blue American dress, and we were among those present at a large reception to the various members of the Methodist mission in this part of China who had not been able to be with us at Nanking. Most of those present were from the Kiangsi mission, I believe, but I do not remember all of them. Among those especially interesting to me was Mrs. Hoose, sister of William B. Pettus of the [[illegible strikethrough]] Y.S.C.S. Like many good people they did not in the few minutes of conversation at tea fulfill the promises their personalities implied, and better acquaintance should bring out much treasure. We were a bit tired when it was over, and had a rather maudlin evening as a resultant reaction.
