and crowds. It is a long time since I have felt such a genuine thrill and happiness al through me about a thing of this kind as I felt tonight.

On the way over to the Pei Hai we saw many women and children on the doorsteps [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] or in the street welcoming the moon. The paper lanterns used at this time are made of a special kind of crinkled paper resembling corn-husks. The lanterns are made in all forms,-conventional lanterns, lotus, ducks, geese, frogs, automobiles, boats, little men, and so on. When the full moon rises on this night she is always greeted with many lanterns, hung by the doors or in the courts, or held by the people as the stand in court or street to welcome her. There were branches of asparagus and feathery-leafed trees with bits of burning incense fastened to the twigs too.

In the park the place was a blaze of light, and on the lake were hudreds of floating lanterns, ducks, geese, lotus flowers, all with lighted candles. Near the great pavilion was a paper boat lighted with electricity in the midst of a field of lotus leaves each of which supported a lighted candle in its center. Most of the lanterns were placed on the water by people crossing the lake in the official boats, along the official lane, but some had been put out at a distance especially and some had drifted out. On the pavilions and tea houses there were special lanterns and special decorations, including a tableau of paper figures of the mouth of Hell, destroying devils and saving Buddhas. Many of the courts which I entered before only by very special permission were now open freely to all who cared to enter. A scene of unsurpassed beauty, the satisfaction of seeing this crowd happily enjoying the holiday in their own lovely park, and Dorothy - what more is necessary to a perfect evening.

It might be well to remark that just as we have rabbits at Easter the Chinese have them at this time. In the moon dwells an old hare who compounds the drug of immortality. At this season there are often little rabbits for sale in the bazaars, and many mud images of rabbit deities riding on fabulous animals appear on the stalls. A special kind of cake cake Moon Cake is supposed to be eaten.
