Sunday, 6 September

We took the day rather easy and got some writing caught up and a few other thingsdone. In the afternoon we went over ans got Tom and Violet and took them to Lung Fo Ssu, the famous temple fair that occurs once in every ten days for two days at time. We bought a few little things, and tried to find a good small pine tree to fit in with the rest of the Japanese things in our front room. We failed to find the little tree we wanted, so went and bought us a new lark, a very nice fellow who will, we hope, honor us with song when he has got his voice back after moulting. It is good to have a bird again.

The week is to be largely occupied with the final examination s of last spring, which have to be finished and graded and the grades in the office by Saturday. We are planning to give the freshman and sophomores a joint examination in each year; that is, instead of examining the sections separately we are going to run all the freshmen through one examination, and the sophomores all through one, in English. As some of the instructors have gone to America or to other jobs it means a very heavy burden for a few of us, especially Miss Stryker and myself. Miss Stryker is making herself responsible for all of Miss Murphy's classes, and I am looking after all of Breece's. Breece had classes in freshman and sophomore required English, and in Western Literature and Parliamentary Law. Fortunately he left answers for the questions in his exams, but it means extra work to proctor them and grade the papers even with answers. The Bartletts are not back yet, and though Mrs. Marshall and Mr. Loehr are on the job we cannot ask them to do too much of last year's work.

In the evening we had a dinner of the foreign members of the YSCS faculty at Hummel's in honor of Langdon Warner. The party was not late in closing, and Dorothy and I went up to the Peking Hotel Roof and danced for a couple hours before returning to our house and bed. The roof was not crowded and it was good fun to be so by ourselves.
