got the little study pretty well fixed up. By the time we got ourselves to bed we were glad the bed was such a good one.

Friday, 18 September

This morning was a good morning, and we got ourselves out of bed with alacrity and exuberance. I worked for the morning in the office finishing freshman registration and the advising of students majoring in English. The afternoon I was in the big study, and then we hiked out to do some errands. At the office of the Peking Leader we met Hugh Hubbard and Dr. H. Y. Wu, all three coming together quite by accident. Then we went on up to the YSCS, where I had a session with my assistants, O.K.'d the plans for my charging desk, and got things set to begin some hard work next week getting our new plan of operation in order. We called the faculty but found only Mr. Hummel at home. A good supper at our own house was followed by the making of some candy. Dorothy then retired while I came out to the big study to do a bit of work.

These days have been very full ones, but with the starting of regular classes this next week we can settle down to a schedule, and then we will better be able to plan our time and use it to the best advantage. Still we have done much in the comparatively short time we have been home. We have settled our house, given entrance exams, final exams, registered a full class of freshmen, had a week-end off, helped to fix up a little difficulty Varney was having, and, above all, added to our stock of knowledge. (The library, of course should not be neglected in the list.) For, I have learned from examination papers that after 1867 in England "a ballet act was passed which made ballet secret;" that "Juvenal was editor of a magazine Sam Johnson wrote for:" that "self-determination is the right of each people to decide to what nation, what form of government, he shall be alleged;" and that the general thought of Milton's "L'Allegro" is "Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile." And having learned these, who would not consider the week well spent?
