reference to marital felicity, and therefore it is the custom to present such gifts as these at this time, especially to newly married couples.

I had work to do in the afternoon at Y.S.C.S., and when I came home, I mean when [[underlined]] we [[underlined]] came home, for Dorothy went up to the school with me, we went on over to Ting Hsiang Hutung, A picnic had been planned to the Temple of Heaven, including in the party Eleanor, Louise, Carey, Allan Priest and Horace Jayne, the last two members of the Fogg Museum Expedition to return, who last arrived in Peking a few days ago, Harry Bingham, and the Marches. We were early, so Priest and I went ahead, planning to meet the others at the Hotel. As some of the party were slow in coming, and the hour had been postponed without our knowing, we had time for some tea and tea-dance before we set out. At the Temple we had a little difficulty getting in, but made it all right, and once in had no assistance or interference. Consequently we are able to open and enter any place that pleased us, and the result was an emotional debauch. Such an evening I have seldom spent. Allan Priest is a man I am delighted to have in Peking and in the School this winter. He is much after my own heart in many ways.

Saturday, 3 October

Work again this day. In the morning my Sophomore English class had a good literary society program in the auditorium of P.U.M.,C. In the afternoon I went up to Y.S.C.S. Though nothing is completely finished about the buildings we are able to start work and we are getting the last touches done for the dedicatory service tomorrow afternoon. Yun Tzu told me of a camera exhibition by the Peking Kuang She (Peking Photographic Society) at Central Park. Dorothy had been in all day so we went over to the park to see the show. There was a good deal of poor stuff, and the mounting and exhibition of much was poor, but there were pieces that would have done credit to some of our exhibits at home. There were pieces I should have been proud to have made. We met Yun Tzu there, and had a pleasant conversation before we finished and came home.

We had a good supper in our house and went to bed very very early.
