block after block on the way they had come. Three or four blocks back, around a corner, they found the dress, with no sign of a wrapper, wound around a telephone pole. Some cross twist of wind had evidently caught it out as they turned the corner. They rescued it, apparently none the worse for its adventure, and then they went on and collected the new butter dish. 

This, however, was a minor incident compared to mine. Becasue of the wind and dust I took a ricksha when I went to the School in the afternoon, and as I stepped up at the gate the notebook I carry in my hip pocket caught on the lamp bracket of the ricksha. Immediately a large portion of posterior, southeast section of my trousers flapped loosely in the breeze admitting the light of day and the chill wind to my B. V. D. 's. With great caution I pulled my coat down as far as it would go, and entered the building, sidling crab-like through the halls to my office. Once in my sanctum I spent the afternoon sorting old magazines and unbound books in privacy and seclusion. I had to admit the awful fact to Pettus and my assistant when they came in, and never was I so polite to Miss Popoff as when I had to go through her office to Pettus's once; In fact I carefully and tactfully kept my face toward her during the entire time of my transit of her office. Eventually it was time to come home and I walked out stiffly and erectly, dropping my coat as far backwards as possible, and heaved a sigh of relieve when [[strikethrough]] iw [[\strikethrough]] I was in my ricksha and had the spot well-concealed. I suppose that now I shall have to get used to carrying my notebook in some other pocket. 

Alnah James was in for tea. She is head of the English work in T'ung Fu now, but expects to be married in the middle of the winter, and Dorothy will probably carry on her work for the balance of the year. Her fiance is still in Hongkong, and their plans are not yet definite. She is a bit excited, and was thoroughly interested in all the details about our wedding. We had a good time.
