steak. At least Louise and I ate beefsteak, while Dorothy looked on hungrily and wished that she had not decied to take some medicine that night on an empty stomach.

Monday, 18 January
I spent a large part of the day working over gradea^[[/]]nd grade charts, trying to get things in order for the reassignment of Freshman sections in English tomorrow. Some of the teachers have not yet handed in their grades, so we will not be able to start English 8 tomorrow but all other classes can go on as usual. I am reassigning the Freshman in such a way that we will have an enlarged honor section, and so that among the other section no student will have his old teacher, and no section will be as it was. We are dropping one section and a young Chinese woman, Mrs. Yang, a graduate of Swarthmore College is taking Mrs. Bartlett's place. I am taking over Loehr's section of Sophomore English, while Dorothy takes mine and we make one out of the former two at T'ung Fu. Loehr is going to take one of the French classes while Wolferz is relieved for his work as Soph adviser. So it goes. These are the times when my job is not so pleasant.

Tuesday, 19 January
Classes started today, and we got up in time to have breakfast before I had to leave for my new eight o'clock. It is rather nice to have only one class and that over at none o'clock. It means getting in a pretty good day's work it I use my time to good advantage. Dorothy also started her classes, with work at Lockhart Hall and T'ung Fu in the morning and another class at the latter place after lunch.

Dorothy went over to Margaret Ruby's for supper. I ate at home and then went to a Yenching Faculty Fellowship meeting at Y.S.C.S. and wished I had stayed home. Ennis, de Vargas, and Hung discussed our duty with regard to war and international peace; and though some goo^[[d]] things were said the discussion was rather pointless, and the whole thing not what it night have been.

Thursday, 21 January
Dorothy had a hard day in school, and in the afternoon we went with the Rubys to the hotel to tea dance. I spoiled the party by seeing Landon.
