We had gone but a short distance when we saw a policeman waiting for us at the edge of a small village a short distance ahead. We continued to walk toward him. As we got nearer he turned away, and a crowd of small boys came to the edge of the road to look at us. We calmly ascended to the fileds on the other side and continued our way back to Wo Fu Ssu, not knowing whether we had been expected and deliberately watched, or simply observed by chance. Anyway, we were not bothered, though we managed to get the girls excited by a relation of the tale of our adventures and our impending arrest. There is still much to investigate in that park, but we'll do it from the other side next time, and pay admission.

Monday, 15 February
When we got home we found that Elmer Galt, whom we expected today, had arrived Saturday night. Fortunately Grandpa had been able to make him feel at home, and he had spent most of the day at T'ungchou.

In the afternoon Dorothy took the pup to the vet and I took Elmer out to the great annual jewel and curio fair at Liu Li Ch'ang. This was the first day and two-thirds of the shops were not yet opened, but prices were good and we bought several little things.

Home mail waited for us when we got in from the country and we enjoyed it thoroughly.

And so the days go.
