We got our own supper and had a quiet evening.

Friday, 5 March

I went up to school in the morning, then to an F.O.R. meeting called to meet Lloyd Balderston, the representative of the American Friends' Service Committee, seeking places for service investment in China. After this meeting I came home, and Dorothy and Peter and I went out to Liu Li Ch'ang to get the Kitchen Gods were having mounted for sending home. We found some reproductions of a Chinese paintings of a new kind, and I got a set of four pictures of horses for myself, and some flowers and landscapes for the school. Today it was comfortable to go without an overcoat, and I did so even when we went up to Pettus's for supper.

This supper was another affair for Balderston, for Pettus had been presenting to him the library as an excellent chance for service in the development of understanding, etc., which is what the Friends are after, and the particular feature for which their help was asked was our salary. It will not involve any kind of mission membership, if it goes through, and my F.O.R interests and Unitarian connections are quite satisfactory to them. After a friendly supper we went over to the library, and after showing the place and some rare books in which Mr. Balderston was intensely interested (he showed a good knowledge of book making and old books) we struck a problem he was working on in finding material on Chinese philosophy and gave him a most impressive demonstration of library service. I hope we were successful, though that can not be determined until the Committee in America has a chance to act.

Saturday, 6 March

Ruth and Henry and little Carl Chou came in and spent most of the morning. They came up for a few days are are marooned with her sister in Peking. Carl tried to play with Peter, but Peter was afraid of him, fearless though he is of anything bigger. In the afternoon Olive Evans and Marion Krespach came in and I gave them some critical advice about a vase Olive had bought. Then we went up to School and fixed up my new office a bit, and stopped for Chinese food on our way home.
