buted some good material in criticismand discussion. Dorothy's new character study A Single Lady he declared by far the best thing turned in and read during the evening; though it was not quite so cordially received by some members of the group. Sometimes this club is good fun, but sometimes it certainly is stupid.

Tuesday, 9 March

Today Dorothy finished a new venture in literary production. In the past she has done mostly poetry and children's stories, which she has done with surpassing excellence such that she has seldom had to make any substantial revisions in the second draft. Now however she is working on character [[crossed out]] sketches of a maturer nature, in addition to her other writing, and they require more concious artistry. Her Single Lady, being relatively simple, took little revision, but the second piece, more complicated had to be pretty thoroughly worked over a second time to get the proper effects and adequate subtleties in order. When it was done it was fine piece of work, and marks, we are sure a beginning of a wider development and a more exacting [[crossed out]] of her art.

I gave my last lecture on painting this afternoon, dealing in a most summary manner with the Yuan, Ming and Ch'ing dynasties, and showing to the little group of the faithful a number of pictures from my own collection and reproductions belonging to the school.

We had dinner and a pleasant evening with the Miles.

Wednesday, 10 March

Eleanor is back again and safely married. She came just about noon and talked a long time with Dorothy while I waited for lunch. In the afternoon I gave my last [[crossed out]] lecture in the bibliography course. I do no more teaching in the YSCS until the summer term now. Ruth and Henry Chou and Carrie Tau had supper with us, Louise came over too, and we had a good party.
