saw Holston again like that at the McNutt Quarry. Above 28' it came thin-bedded gray granular limestone abounding
[[left margin]] 598 [[/left margin]] in Trilobites. This is the Whitesburg limestone. Above the Whitesburg occurs smooth black limestones that weather to ash gray. These belong to
[[left margin]] 598-a [[/left margin]]
The Athens formation. Above them occurs dark gray OHosee limestone.

May 24
In morning went from Salem, Va over Catawba Mt to Catawba Valley. Went west of Catawba Sanatorium about 1 mile. Here we collected from

Lenoir. Cystonotella C, Panrorthus C, as small rafinesquinoid like that at Riceville, c. These beds were originally called Holston by E.OU. If not Lenoir they may be Whitesburg because Mr. Butts puts upper part of these in the Whitesburg. Lithologically the lower and upper parts are alike, The Lenoir & Whitesburg together are not over 25'.

In afternoon met Bevan in Roanoke then went on to Lexington and visited Whistle
