2 by 13 is 26, whose square root is 5 1/10 near as 13 to 5 1/10 so is 14 pints to 5 1/2 near: whence we conclude that a reservatory of 2 feet heigh thrô three lines will give 5 1/2 pints in a minute.

If ye height was 45 feet we must in a minute ye square root of 585 ye product of 13 by 45, that root is 24 3/16 near; wherefore as 13 to 24 3/16 so 14 to 26 near, whence is known that a reservatory of 45 feet would give 26 pints in a minute thrô a hole of 63 lines.

When we apply a long streigh pipe to a large reservatory and that that pipe is perpendicular it gives more water than if ye pipe was not there and that there was only at ye bottom of ye reservatory a hole equal to ye hole of ye pipe. Here are some experiments wch I made of it.

[[image: drawing of a rectangle A B C D with a pipe out of the bottom E H F, and dotted lines extending from the top of the pipe up to the line A B]]

A B C D is a reservatory of a foot large and heigh, there is put at ye hole E a pipe of glass of 3 feet 3 lines large at ye top and 3 lines and 1/2 at ye bottom towards F if there had been but a hole of 3 lines in E without ye pipe, it would have given in 60 seconds something less than 4 pints according to ye rules above; and if it had been equally large thrô out as A B ye height G E being 4 foot and ye hole E of 3 lines, it would have given about 8 pints 1/3 by ye same rules; but ye pipe being there it did give but about ye mean proportional between 4 pints and 8 1/3 pints; ye reason that it gives more than thrô 3 lines in F proceeds from ye acceleration on wch ye water makes running thrô ye pipe, wch is increased according to [[?old] numbers if there was noting but ye pipe, but it is retained by that wch is in ye reservatory wch diminisheth that acceleration, because it cannot be seperated from it, but also that in ye pipe makes that in ye reservatory follow swifter than it would if ye pipe was not fitted to it, and by that means makes a mean swiftness of running wch changes according to ye length and largeness of ye small pipes.

I have observed in these experiments that ye pipe being unequally large at ye two ends as in that wch was of 3 lines at one end and 3 1/2 at ye other gave always ye same quantity whatever end was put in ye hole E; wch proceeds from hence that all ye water is voided in ye same time wholly filling it from one end to ye other:

I made another like experiment there was soddered a pipe of 6 feet and an inch largeness to ye hole E of a cubic foot, wch having been filled with water ye pipe was void in 37 seconds and having cut ye pipe thrô ye middle H it will be void in 45 and cutting it thrô ye top E, it will be void in 95; whence is seen that ye length of ye pipe gives greater acceleration:

Another vessel whereof ye water was 4 inches above ye hole E of 4 lines: where is ye pipe E F, gave when it was 2 foot heigh 12 1/2 inch measures where if it had given but 8 1/2 at ye height of 4 inches, and if ye vessel had been to F there was give 18 1/2; so it is a mean proportional wch proceeds from ye swiftness of ye water wch always fills ye pipe, and descends swifter thrô E, but not so swift as if ye vessel had 28 inches height: We found these 8 1/2 ye pipe being but one [[strikethrough]] one [[/strikethrough]] inch heigh, because it made little acceleration: another pipe of 4 feet made almost ye same effect it had 4 lines at one end and 4 1/2 at ye other, it was put to the hole E in both these positions, it gave ye same quantity of water, but that it seemed that ye 4 lines being in E and ye 4 1/2 in F there went out 3 or 4 spoonfull more streight:

But having applyed a pipe of 2 feet 1/2 long and it hole 5/4 of a lines, there went not out more when ye pipe was of that length than when it was only one inch; wch proceeds from ye rubbing along ye streight pipe wch [[strikethrough]] swiftness [[/strikethrough]] hinders ye water, from accelerating its swiftness in falling
