119.

A band of tinn of 3 lines 1/4 large supported 100 pound without being broken and is broken by 130 or 128, and being drawn downwards is not broke at 120 pound, but is broken at 123 at a place where it had some flaw, we judged that it had supported more if it had been drawn very streight and there had been no default.

A band of tinn of 4 1/3 lines large carrying (a faux) [[blank space]] of 5 inches in ye small square is not broke by 180 pounds, we did not finish breaking it by putting in other weights.

A band of paper of 6 lines large being pushed by its two ends upon ye two opposite crosses of a square frame of 5 inches in ye work is broken by 4 3/4 pounds, and there must be 4 ounces added to break an equal one drawn downwards. 2 others also of 6 lines were broken by 4 pounds keeping them 3/4 of a minute with ye weight as well in ye great square as in ye little one.

Another band of paper of ye same force of 6 1/3 lines large is broken by 4 pounds, it was placed upon ye same frame in like manner as ye other it had three cords wch carried a small box and another cord passing below wch was sustained on ye top by a small stick, we put into ye box by little and little weights till ye band was broken. There was glued of this paper in ye great square of 9 inches within and in ye small of 5 inches after ye same manner as when we make paper windows we placed in ye middle of ye great paper a round leather of 3 inches 4 lines and upon ye middle of ye leather a lead weight of 4 pound wch was but 2 1/2 inches large at ye end, wch was placed upon ye leather, we heaped up many weights upon ye first, and ye paper did not break but at 42 pounds.

The other paper upon ye small square broke at 34 pounds, but its leather was but 1 3/4 inch large upon wch we put ye same first weight.

[[image: A square frame criss-crossed by four bands A B (across the middle) on top of C D (top to bottom) on top of E R (upper left corner to lower right corner), and F G upper right corner to lower left corner, all crossing in the center of the square where there is a circle on the top band.]]

To compare these experiments one with another and with ye bands of paper ye largeness of ye leather wch was put in ye great frame being 3 inches and ye base of ye weight 2 1/2 inches so that ye leather was not held fast at ye sides, and we may suppose ye largeness of ye band wch occupied ye diameter was 5 times as great as that of the band of 6 lines wch supported 4 pounds and taking another band a cross C D of ye same largeness, if ye first A B sustained 28 pounds to be ye quintuple of 4 pounds, these 2 would sustain 40, ye 2 pounds more were sustained by ye 4 diagonal bands E R G F, wch suffer very little for ye above said reason in respect of ye cords because they are longer than ye others, and are not extended their whole extent to be broken. in ye final small frame ye band A B was but 3 1/2 times as large as ye band of 6 lines, it ought therefore to sustain 14 pounds and the two in a cross 28 pounds the 6 remaining pounds being for ye 4 diagonal bands, and althô this is more in proportion than in ye great, it happens because of the inequallity of ye matter wch hath its absolute resistance less in one place than in another. But if ye bases of ye weights had been equal in the two squares of paper they should have carried ye same weight; ye rupture in both is made between ye weight and ye square of ye wood.

Transcription Notes:
Reviewed mandc: Re-reviewed and amended. Indicated a blank space following (a faux) which was the author's reminder to look up and insert the proper English word, probably "unsupported." The text does not describe the diagram sufficiently or use all of the reference points. It is difficult to tell how the diagram relates to the text. The steps in the experiment are unclear. It is similarly unclear in the Desaguliers translation which uses the same diagram and coordinates. What looks to be an "R" on the diagram logically was probably an "H" in the original.
