I don't believe the "fs" attached by pen to the ounce symbol is the old "ss" because the author uses "ss" for "half" when he means "ss".
mandc: I think he uses the fs when there is no intervening quantity, e.g., symbol iiss, for two and one-half. "Nt to me is author's symbol for "Mix." It may be an "M" with a line thru it.
