appropriations for the Section of 
Graphic Arts. The unfortunate consequences

out of the present condition of things 
made themselves very seriously felt in 
connection with the World's Columbian
Exposition. It was with great reluctance 
that I undertook to arrange the small exhibition
illustrating the development of 
the reproductive arts which was decided 
upon almost at the last moment before
the opening of the exposition. The limitations
of space alone made it impossible
to do justice to the subject, and the limitation
in means served still further to
lower the character of the collection, in 
spite of the fact that out of the 161 specimens 
exhibited, or at least prepared for exhibition, 74 were lent for the purpose. The usefulness of the exhibition was, moreover, crippled, by the destruct-
