Thunder & Lightning - not so violent as yesterday

Short distance telephone will not work - burnt out - Long distance is all right - Truly, we have a great convenience - the telephone - We know its worth when it is unworkable - 

A [[strikethrough]] tax [[/strikethrough]] law has been passed by the Legislature of this State, to the effect that all mining & manufacturing Co's et.al et al. must collect a tax of 3 [[cent symbol]] per day upon all persons 21 years of age or over who are not American citizens - The Companies will be paid for their trouble (?)  We are now at work making out list of Employees to use on pay day - This law will cause a great deal of [[asterisk symbol]] work in the clerical line -

Foggy and damp after heavy showers last night - 
Cleared up nicely about 11 Am - 

Short distance unworkable all day - L.V. Line man examined them and pronounced this phone and the one at Buck Mountain as being burnt out - Will have to have several parts replaced - 

Both Collieries worked 9 hours - 
Will be idle until L. V. runs cars next week - They run 4 days this week and we have loaded them all in 3 - 

Have men at work, Bmtn, digging out place for Air Compressor, in the [[number symbol]]2 Engine house - 

[[asterisk symbol]] Mr. Jones left Hazleton today, for a two to three weeks vacation - Will attend a meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers at Duluth - Will then go to the Black Hills, and may continue on to California -
