Commissioner Raleigh NC Aug 2 1865 Association Sec. of Am. Miss. Sir It is my disagreeable duty to inform you that one of the agents commissioned by your Assn is giving me some trouble and embarassing the work in which we are engaged. I allude to Mr. Green (I think the Rev. Geo. N). He was a short time in this city, and during that time [[footnote 1]] a serious difficulty arose in the Baptist Church, between the white & the colored people resulting in an irregular secession of the latter class. I advised him to withdraw and labor elsewhere. I have now reports of serious trouble in Smithfield, through his imprudence. I do not think him a bad man. But his zeal is not guided by wisdom, and I think that he can do more good at the north than in this region at present. I have long been a supporter & friend of the A.M. Assn and welcome its 'efforts' for the Freedmen in this State. But you are aware that the utmost care is requisite now, to avoid exciting passions that may lead to a fatal war of the races. Very Respectfully E. Whittlesey Col. and Asst. Commissioner [[footnote 1]] Rev. Geo. N. Green [[line across page]]
