Captain

Referring to the remarks embodied by Col. Wiegels in his last Report, extracted from your report for Roanoke Island, I am directed by the Asst. As soon as a sufficient number are ready, transportation will be sent them from the Island to the mainland. It is desired to clear the Island at once, and the Asst. Colonel.

The Asst. Commissioner having examined the evidence and other papers in the case of Orange et al freedmen, vs. Dr. Wm. R. Holt, of Lexington N. C., decides that the plaintiffs are entitled to and shall receive one fifth part (1/5) of the oats, rye, hay, wheat and corn, raised by the plaintiffs labor on Dr. Holts lands last year. It appearing from the evidence that six (6) stacks of oats, 80 bushels of rye, 16 stacks of hay, 1007 bushels of wheat, 4860 bushels of corn in the ear, was raised. You will please see that 1/5 of each of these crops is given to the plaintiffs - to be properly proportioned among them under your direction. In case the crops are not so apportioned the money value thereof - being the money value of 1/5 of the oats rye, hay, wheat & corn - will be paid to the plaintiffs by Dr. Holt, & apportioned among them under your direction.
A larger proportion of the crop would have been allowed, had it not appeared in evidence that the freedmen did not work as well as usual.
