A report has just been made to me that a colored boy about eighteen years of age has been sentenced to be hung on the 21st of Dec at Greensboro N.C.  He was I am informed convicted of stealing a gold watch and [[strikethrough]] chain [[/strikethrough]] a sum of money from a room in the house where he resided.  I have the honor to inquire whether such is the case or not as I am directed by the War Dept to make an immediate investigation.  If the case is as represented I respectfully request if it is [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]] within your power that the execution of the sentence be delayed to enable me to fully and impartially proceed with the investigation.  Your Excellency will observe the short period remaining before the day fixed and as early an answer as possible is earnestly requested so that I may be guided thereby in my attention to the matter.

I have the honor to furnish you with a copy of the complaint made by Capt. J.F. Curren Asst Supt for Johnston County in the case of a colored boy named James Henry apprenticed to a Mr Thornton without the consent of his parent who is able and willing to support him and to ask for an examination by the Solicitor or other proper and competent legal officer that the objection of exparte examination may be avoided.

Your communication of this date asking the name of the colored boy under sentence of death at Greensboro NC is received.  To you inquiries I am unable to give explicit answers - the communication from the War Dept is based upon a communication received from this State and gives no information beyond what was embraced in my letter of today other than its being the decission of the County Judge of Guilford County and from the tone of the letter must have been of very recent date.
I respectfully request a respite of one month in which time I feel confident that the requirements of the War Dept can be
