I have the honor to enclose herewith a Copy of Report of Gen. Avery relating to Robert Davis (freedman) now at Greensboro under sentence of death. This report embraces some facts, which possibly may never have come to the notice of Your Excellency, and are respectfully offered in behalf of the prisoner. I can give Davis transportation out of the State, should such a proceeding arise in any manner as a Condition connected with his Case. I have the honor to be Very respectfully Your obdt Servant J.V. Davis freedman, under sentence of death at Greensboro in this State, with accompanying papers. There are interesting facts given in this report, not embraced in that of Col. Cogswell, previously forwarded to you. I propose to send at once to Gov. Worth, for his information, an extract from this report, believing that most of the history of the case as exhibited therein, will be new to him, and expecting favorable results from its perusal.
