Pursuant to instructions of the War Dept Bureau R.F. & A.L. the  Asst Commissioner of this State instructs me to call your attention to the case in which certain Colored persons formerly slaves of Mrs Miraim P. Alston deceased of Randolph Co. N.C. were the plaintiffs and for whom you were Counsel which case was rendered in their favor with a verdict against defendent for Two thousand one hundred and fifty dollars ($2150).
This case was tried in 1859 or 60 and as yet no return has been made.  I have the honor to request that you will furnish these Hd Qrs with information upon the subject at your earliest convenience.

I am directed by the Acting Asst Commissioner to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 9th inst enclosing a bill for claimed to be due to you by Capt Shaffer.
Your letter to Genl Howard has been by Genl Howard refered here and returned [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] to Genl Howard accompanied by the report of Capt Shaffer.  The letter from Capt Shaffer to you spoken of in your letter you have omitted to enclose.
This Bureau cannot undertake to enforce the payment of debts due by the Officers employed in it, the Civil Courts afford a speedy and easy mode of compelling payment of debts of this character.
