Colonel

I have just received information in regard to the incarceration in Wake County jail of certain parties under circumstances which according to the version made to me is in violation of every principle of justice and an attempt to use the Civil law to the prejudice of colored people.
On the 5th & 7th of July Mr John Dalrymple of this County assaulted and beat the children of Saml Buchanon (Cld) who were living and working upon his farm. The father was about at the time and upon a 2nd attempt of Mr D. on the 7th the father interfered and forbid him beating his children.
Upon a pretext of misdemeanor said Dalrymple had the entire family of Buchanons arrested consisting of Saml Buchanon the father two sons, daughter, & grand child. The daughter has been released upon her own recognisance, the sons were bailed by some party under the condition that they work for their bondsman without wages until next term of Court. The father is kept in custody in default of large bail.
I respectfully request that an order may be issued to turn over these parties to me for our investigation of the case. This is undoubtedly a scheme to get rid of these parties without compensation for the labor they had performed, they being under contract for share of crop and said crop is now nearly ready to gather.

I am Colonel
