[[preprinted]] 556 [[/preprinted]] Bureau of Refugees Freedmen &c Hd Qrs Asst. Commissioner Raleigh N.C. July 13th 1867 Howard Maj Genl O. O. Commissioner Washington D.C. General I am informed that an appropriation of two thousand dollars has been furnished to certain parties in Morganton in this State - for the erection of a School building for freedmen at that place, the parties to supply the lot. From a recent inspection report of the Supt of Education it appears that a lot has been purchased upon which stands a building which forms part of the purchase. Said building s sufficiently large for the accomodation of the wants of that community and can be made perfectly suitable for a sum not exceeding five hundred dollars. in view of these facts it is respectfully urged that the balance say fifteen hundred dollars be devoted to other localities where it could be advantageously expended.
