During the month March I was absent in Philadelphia on leave without pay during which time however I supervised the construction of the Engine and Dynamo for the above mentioned electric plan and assisted in making the arrangements for laying the wires in the East end of the Smithsonian Building, in erecting the new lamps and in changing the old fixtures - also in the preliminary plans for the ventilating plant for that building now in course of construction.  The lighting plant was so far completed that it was put in operation on the [[blank]] of April [[blank]] days after my actual assumption of the duties of Curator of Technological Collections on my final return to Washington.

The Committee,of which I was a member, to which the rearrangement of the retiring rooms in the Smithsonian Institution was referred made careful examination of the premises and recommended the transfer of all the closets and other sanitary appliances from the East Wing to the basement and three floors above it in the South tower - these recommendations (except that the number of retiring rooms were reduced from four to three - no closets being put up on the floor on which the ^[[R]]egents room is located) were approved by the Secretary and the work has been completed under the directions of the Superintendent of Buildings.
