Northern Bolivia

October 14, 1963
6 KM from Unduavi on the
Unduavi-La Paz road

Arrive area which looks as if it might have a lot of vegetation 5:25 am. 11,650 ft, according to my altimeter (which I have not calibrated in La Paz yet) Still dark

A few birds starting to sing 5:40. but still too dark to identify them.

Quite a lot of different species singing 5:45 am. But nothing that I am absolutely sure belongs to my group(s).

Now that it is getting a little lighter, I can see that this is an area of rather scattered scrub. Lots of the land may have been cleared artificially. Scrubs looks as it it might be rather dry most of the time - although it is dripping now. The day is overcast. There are patches of fog around. And it probably rained last night.

Still unable to see adequately. 5:55 am. Leaving

Arrive new area, a little further along the road to Unduavi. 11,200 ft. Fog coming in. Scrub a little thicker 6:05 am

Nothing much here either. Going on again.

Another area further on 10,750 ft. 6:12 am. Vegetation considerably thicker. But no red tubular flowers. Some dark thrushes around. Once I think I hear a Diglossa type twitter. Again near small clump of tubular red flowers which I have just discovered. Several hummingbirds around.

I doubt if this can be the breeding season for most of the Diglossas around here.
