Double line NOTES FROM THE LEAGUE About a year ago, in a talk with the producer Frederick M. Zollo, we learned about a pilot program in Massachusetts to enable schoolchildren to experience live theatre. Zollo, deeply troubled over the loss of the theatregoing habit, was convinced the audience had to be rebuilt from scratch. He saw a change in Massachusetts. With a friend in the Massachusetts Legislature, Nick Paleologos, chairman of the House Committee on Education, he began talking about making theatre attendance from the first grade part of the school curriculum, and last spring funds were appropriated to send some 7,000 Massachusetts schoolchildren to a live performance to see if it would work. That program has come a long way. It acquired a name-PASS, for Performing Arts Student Series. It gained the support of the principal state leaders, including Governor Dukakis and Speaker of the House George Keverian. It became a million-dollar line item in the state budget, making it possible this year for 200,000, or a quarter of the schoolchildren in Massachusetts, to attend a live theatre performance at least once. Best of all, perhaps, the idea seems to be catching the interest of other states. That, of course, was Zollo's hope from the beginning-that government would accept it as a national obligation that fine theatre be made part of the education of schoolchildren. In New York City, the Early Stages Program of the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting, begun in 1983 with the cooperation of members of The League of American Theatres and Producers, regularly sends schoolchildren to Broadway theatre with donated tickets. At the Belasco Theatre, some 200,000 high-school students over the next year will be bussed to performances of Shakespeare in a plan begun last fall by Joseph Papp in cooperation with the Board of Education.
