U.S. National Museum
Washington, September 6th 1883.
Sir:
I have the honor to submit herewith my report of the department under my charge for the month of August 1883.
The only accession to the collections under my immediate care was No. 72,968 a large palm leaf fan from the Samoan Islands, presented by Mrs John Rodgers, Washington.
Mr N.P. Niblack was engaged in studying the ethnology of the South Africa tribes and in prosecuting his training for research in the future, during the first part of the month, and has been absent on leave since the 15th of Aug.
Mr Sweeney was employed in mounting specimens for the first ten days of the month and has since been absent on leave.
Mr Towne has been busily engaged in poisoning a large number of perishable specimens belonging to this department, and skins belonging to the department of mammals. The appliances for this work have been so perfected that it is to be hoped the ravages of insects may be, in a great measure if not wholly, prevented hereafter.
