f. minor Zelfeliher thms 20.8.83 - don't understand why handwritten note looks like the ate of 20.8.83 while the typed note refers to 1978. Laura T - Good question! The reason the dates on the two labels are different is because they are two different types of labels. The first in the lower right hand corner is the main specimen label which records identification, where is was collected, when it was collected and who it was collected by. The second printed label above it and to the left, is an annotation label. This label records a new identification determination. In 1978, D. E. Boufford looked at this specimen and determined that it was not Circium intermedia f. minor, but rather the hybrid Circaea x intermedia. The top of the specimen label says Fl. Hercyn, may refer to region of Germany. Joan K. Thanks. How interesting. I am not a Botanist but simply looked for information that might be useful and you may already know most of this. 1. I looked up Circaea x intermedia and found out that it is in forests http://www.brc.ac.uk/plantatlas/index.php?q=node/3519 2. I also found out that the Hercyn was one of the ancient German Forests.https://books.google.ca/books?id=k2c6AAAAcAAJ&pg=PA136&lpg=PA136&dq=hercyn+germany&source=bl&ots=fiLm6MCDhZ&sig=XwbhQijG2m_UPNFZ02riNv-SJXg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiHwp73zqnQAhWh44MKHRyiAH4Q6AEIQzAH#v=onepage&q=hercyn%20germany&f=false I don't know naming conventions in Botany. So if this plant is in alpine areas, then in 1883 was the collector naming it after one of Germany's ancient forests, or that he found it in an area that was part of the Hercyn? I also read that to walk the Hercyn would take 60 days. I wonder what part of the Hercyn or something related to it would have been around in 1883? Would he have been in the Black Forest? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercynian_Forest Was the collector's name Vock? I've found some leads about a last name of Vock but they haven't been that good otherwise I'd list them. I also tried searching on Volk and I'm getting more results but not people who were alive in 1883. I've used Volk 1883 germany "black forest" plants as a Google search and its not bad. The search term needs some more umph to it.
