A slate blank, probably for the manufacture of a ceremonial wand, from the Spiro Mound, Le Flore County, Oklahoma.

[[underlined]] ACQUISITIONS [[/underlined]]

Through the year our principal acquisitions by purchase are as follows: The Edward Borein Collection of 386 specimens, largely Plains ethnology; 13 selected pieces from the Irvin S. Cobb collection; a bronze plaque from the Atacamas area of Argentina, which had been in the collections of the Maryland Historical Society since 1854; and the Judge Nathan Bijur Collection of 776 specimens, mostly Tlingit, Salish, Pomo and Apache basketry but containing an unusual bear-paw headdress from the Tlingit, a quill embroidered deer skin Athapascan coat and a comprehensive group of early Bering Sea archaeology.

[[underlined]] SIZE OF COLLECTIONS [[/underlined]]

There have been added to the collections during the past fiscal year 3,015 specimens, and there are now in the entire collection catalogue entries running consecutively to 209,093, an increase during the year of 1,960.

[[underlined]] DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY [[/underlined]]

The usual routine activities were continued through the year, there having been no new material added to the collections.
