Leave at 5 AM about half an hour after the Russians and as there is a good breeze going they leave us rapidly behind. About ten pass the mouth of the Melozikahgut River and have a fine view of Mount Hohonila the first of a series of high mountains on the north side of the River, stop at eleven as the sun

is very hot and propose to sleep till night an then go on, but a good breeze springing up about 3 o cl. go on but soon lose it get dinner about five conclude to go on till we pass the Russians and camp & sleep next day. We are about 35 miles from New Kakgut. Get a fine [[Kurfisker?]] a nest and 3 eggs with young birds in them of the [[?]] crowned sparrow & some beetles. See a maple log at least two feet in diameter on the bank, which must have come from the headwater of the river as there is no maple here. Also a blue & a black [[turik?]] butterfly  The mosquitoes are very troublesome. The water has
