_____Wednesday June 5, 1867_______ West A to the Youkon. N.1. [[sketch of river]] Newicargit Mts from mouth of Harbor N by E.5. S sd low 1/2 way small river on a very large island. NNE 6 more island (3) N sd. Hardgray rock. laminated like [[argllite?]] NE 20° 600 ft. further on 14° 1 mile. Part of it reddened with iron, and part containing quartz injected or deposited. parallel with the layers. N.10. High wooded bluffs on N sd. widens with 3 island here S.sd low. Bluff 1/2 way syenitic stone without felspar or [[mica?]] composed of quarts hornblend & a little epicote. Rusty in spots; without any definite dip or strike. A little further the same rock perpendicular planes parallel with the river. Low Hills on S.sd. blu[[?]] E. N.E.5 + Camp [[margin]] Small river N. sd.[[/margin]] [[end page]] [[start page]] Leave Nourkahgut about 20 minutes after the Russians, about 5 A.M. with the birch canoe in company. Chi peet at 10 on a bank with the Russians & as the sun is very hot, lay over three hours & sleep. Start at two and continue on our way till 5 when we have tea again and go on. Coming round a point see a fire and hope to find Antoine Houte & the English Indians from Nuklukahyet. Go ashore & see an Indian and a white man who turns out to be Peter M'Cloud from Fort Youkon His story is as follows. He left Fort Youkon 4 days after Antoine Houle, deserting from the service on account of ill treatment &c a long story. He came down in a birch alone and met Houle at Nuklukahyet and representing himself as carrying letters [[draw?]] to me of our parties he went [[end page]]
