Lay by to grease our bidarra and to change from travelling in the day which is very hot to the night which though nearly all day light is cool about noon a puff of wind springs up and the Russians immediately put off. Against my remonstrances our things are put into the bidarra and we sail about 300 yards when as I expected the wind died utterly away. By using all the entreaties I could. I induced Whymper to go ashore and let us sleep

till evening and then go on and pass the Russians, sleep the next day and go on the next night. At half past six start but through some mistake of Kurills we go around a slough in the river about 25 miles of which at least ten is dead loss, about four AM get into the Youkon again and round a point see the Russians camped. Hear they intend to start early in the morning. Whymper sees some fresh meat which acts on him like oil of rhodium on rats he insists on changing ^[[the plan]] again sleeping a few hours now and then starting in the very hottest part of the day. He was not the same mind twice alike, We have been for the last four days frittering away our time sleeping an hour or two at long intervals which does not do any one any good and we do not go as far as if we settled fairly down to one plan.
