17: Left on the Hurasco at 9 AM. Day clear & bright. In an hour we were at the Gatun locks. Here we passed thru 3 locks & were raised each time about 26 feet to the 80 foot level of Gatun Lake. The locks worked perfectly & the water came in from below rapidly boiling up with a hissing sound like a whirlpool. In 10 minutes the lock was filled & then the gates opened & we went to the next lock. Electric engiges pulled the boat thru or steadied her while she used her own motive power in passing from one lock to another. At Culebra cut we met several dredgers anchored at the landslip on which they work several hours each day when the canal is closed. The slips were very extensive & covered many yards or a few acres.
