and were quite annoying about the ankles but never buzzed around our head.  They were long slender bodies with transverse stripes.  The natives brought paraquetes, sprouted coco palms & other plants aboard to sell.  I saw one live squirrel size of the gray squirrel but dark brownish black brindle. A [[dermes?]] eaten jaguar skin was also offered for sail.  Day hot but partly cloudy.

[[circled]] 23 [[/circled]]  Got away at 7 A.M. and steamed down the River.  Arrived at Puna Island at the mouth at noon.  Saw many cattle & some mules & horses in pastures along the bank.  No palms were seen in the forest or on the shore line & the forest generally tho very heavy had a different character from Panama Isthmus.  Many brown pelicans & small gulls were seen, and a few black vultures.  One frigate bird was noticed.  No flowering trees seen in the forest.  The small palm from which panama hats are made grows in the forest.  It is a small fan leaved species the fibers for hats being obtained from the young budding leaves.
