White Cleric Joins Negro Congregation

The Rev. Dr. E. Franklin Jackson of the NAACP and of John Wesley AME Zion Church believes "it is easier to ask for integration when you're integrated yourself."

So five years ago the historic national church of the predominantly Negro denomination which he serves welcomed its first white communicants.

This month the church in the year of the Second Precinct at 14th and Corcoran sts. nw. welcomed its first white staff member - the Rev. William G. Thompson III, a 25-year-old senior at Wesley Theological Seminary here.

Although his home is Buckhannon, W. Va., an all-white town of 15,000, Mr. Thompson last year became interested in the problems of Negroes adjusting to big city living. At the time, he was associated with the Shepherds of the Street program of the Methodist Church, which operates in the vicinity of John Wesley.

As one of John Wesley's assistant pastors, he will continue to work in youth and social areas, stimulate contact with white churches and be able to administer any sacred rite of the church.

"So far no one has appeared apathetic or tense toward me," Mr. Thompson said yesterday. "Everyone has treated me and my wife very warmly." She will be singing in the choir when he preaches his first sermon Nov. 10.

Dr. Jackson said he hopes the year Mr. Thompson spends working with him before returning to West Virginia "will encourage white and Negro churches alike to integrate their staffs."

Singing Group Competes with Reston Commotion
By Cecelia H. Porter

A group which calls itself the Wilkerson Foundation Singers, seven in all, presented an outdoor program of solo and chamber chorus pieces last night at Lake Anne in Reston.

The concert was one in the new town's Summer Twilight Series, inaugurated this season at the man-made lake.

The facilities for open-air performances at this initial phase of town life are strictly makeshift. The stage consists of a slightly raised tiered brick platform which one day will provide the entranceway for the Washington Plaza Baptist Church.

Brown brick townhouses enclose the stage on either side, and there is only a low wooded [[remainder of paragraph covered by folded page]]

a song of Richard Hagemann and fine control in two pastoral duets of Purcell, performed with Alberta Driver and Gladys McDaniels.

One of the tenors, William Gross, showed much volume in an Italian aria of Donaudy, but a persistent buzz to his tone proved a little annoying.

The other singers succeeded quite well as a group, in choral songs of Hassler and Schubert, and in a cantata of Buxtehude, all conducted by Joy McLean.

Their voices blended nicely, they responded sensitively to each other in antiphonal passages, and they had a refined way with phrasing.

Each appeared at least once alone. In the solo Lied and aria repertoire, none of the musicians except Miss Reid and Gross seemed ready for professional appearances. Vocal quality was generally strained and inflexible.

Ronald Tymus was an able pianist for the singers, though he couldn't be envied for the characterless, one-horsed spinet contraption on which he had to play.
